Minister Paul Scully Dismissed in Government Shake-Up Led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

Paul Scully has been ousted from his role as the minister for tech and the digital economy in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent cabinet reshuffle. Additionally, the MP for Sutton and Cheam has lost his position as the minister for London. Throughout his tenure in the tech department, Scully contributed to initiatives such as the Online Safety Bill, semiconductor strategy, and the AI White Paper. He also served as the co-chair of the Digital Skills Council.

Expressing his sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), Scully remarked, “Had better days at work. Waited for three buses to get in this morning and then got the Spanish Archer this evening from my two ministerial positions in the reshuffle…”

Scully’s dismissal comes on the heels of George Freeman’s resignation as the minister for science, research, and innovation. Freeman cited a desire to focus on his health and family as reasons for stepping down.

The government reshuffle initiated by Sunak commenced with the removal of Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who faced criticism for an opinion piece on the Metropolitan Police’s handling of protests.

Notably, former Prime Minister David Cameron reentered the government fold as part of the reshuffle, taking over the role of foreign secretary from the newly appointed home secretary, James Cleverly.

In a statement, Scully expressed his intention to shift his focus to Sutton, Cheam, and Worcester Park, his family, and overall life. He also emphasized his interest in monitoring the government’s progress and advocating for a more dedicated Mayor for London who cares about the city.

Paul Scully was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy) at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology from 7 February 2023 He was also Minister for London from 13 February 2020.

He was previously, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport from 27 October 2022 to 7 February 2023.Minister of State at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities between 7 July 2022 and 27 October 2022.Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from 13 February 2020 to July 2022.
