Zuckerberg bets big: Meta to pour $65 billion into AI in 2025 amid Trump’s $500 billion “Stargate” showdown

Meta Platforms is reportedly set to spend up to $65 billion in 2025 to supercharge its AI ambitions, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced. The investment includes hiring for AI roles, building a massive 2 GW data center, and expanding GPU capacity to over 1.3 million by year’s end.

Meta Platforms is gearing up to spend a staggering $65 billion in 2025 to supercharge its artificial intelligence ambitions. According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the investment will fuel the company’s AI infrastructure, hiring, and a monumental data center project. The announcement comes just days after President Donald Trump unveiled the $500 billion Stargate initiative, signaling what many are calling a new AI arms race.

Meta’s $65 billion capital expenditure exceeds Wall Street expectations and places the tech giant squarely in the race against AI heavyweights like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. Zuckerberg’s ambitious blueprint includes the construction of a more-than-2-gigawatt data center — equivalent to powering a significant chunk of Manhattan — and increasing the company’s AI computing capacity to over 1.3 million GPUs by the year’s end.

“This will be a defining year for AI,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “This is a massive effort, and over the coming years it will drive our core products and business.”

The emphasis on AI aligns with Meta’s evolving strategy, which includes high-profile projects like its Ray-Ban smart glasses and open-source Llama AI models, which provide businesses and developers access to cutting-edge technology at no cost — a stark contrast to the walled gardens of competitors like OpenAI.

Zuckerberg’s announcement comes hot on the heels of President Donald Trump’s unveiling of the Stargate initiative — a $500 billion public-private partnership involving OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank to boost AI infrastructure nationwide. Analysts believe the timing of Meta’s announcement was no coincidence.

“Zuckerberg is signaling to the market that he does not want to be second in the AI race,” said Gil Luria, analyst at D.A. Davidson. “The timing of the announcement was likely impacted by Stargate, which created urgency around sending a message.”

Meta’s move also mirrors a broader trend among tech giants. Microsoft recently disclosed plans to invest $80 billion in data centers for fiscal 2025, while Amazon is set to outspend its 2024 estimate of $75 billion.

Why AI Is the crown jewel for tech titans

The AI sector has rapidly become the battleground for Big Tech, with companies investing billions to dominate the next wave of computing. Meta, once primarily associated with social media, has transformed itself into a serious AI contender, leveraging its proprietary models and expertise.

Its AI chatbot, smart devices, and strategic pivot toward metaverse integration underscore a larger vision: being a leader in the AI-driven economy.

The company is one of Nvidia’s largest clients, benefiting from the chip maker’s dominance in AI hardware. Experts suggest that Meta’s planned infrastructure will be critical for running large-scale AI models capable of powering everything from chatbots to advanced business solutions.

While Meta’s ambitious plans are generating buzz, they come with risks. AI infrastructure is notoriously expensive, and rivals like Microsoft and Google boast substantial resources and an early lead in certain areas.

However, Meta’s open-source approach could prove to be a differentiator, fostering widespread adoption of its technology and creating a robust ecosystem.

As shares of Meta inched 1% higher following the announcement, one thing is clear: Zuckerberg is determined to ensure Meta not only competes but potentially leads in the AI gold rush.

Whether this audacious $65 billion gamble pays off remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure — the AI race just got a lot more interesting.
