The 3 mind habits sabotaging your client acquisition efforts (And how to break free)

MorningRoar #3

It’s been two days since I started building new habits.

Each morning, I wake up, put on my running shoes, and run for 20 minutes along the River Witham in Lincoln.

When I get home, I sit down and write a page on a topic I meditated on during my run.

This morning, it was raining, and as I tried to wake up, my mind gave me plenty of reasons to skip my new routine.

I imagined myself slipping and falling or getting so wet that I might catch a cold. All sorts of ideas came to mind—some serious, some ridiculous—but thank goodness I resisted.

I ran, and as I did, I thought about how the mind can form bad habits that prevent us from achieving our goals.

If you know me, you know I talk a lot about client acquisition, especially in the context of digital technology and SaaS businesses. Today, let’s discuss three mental habits that can sabotage your client acquisition efforts: the fear of rejection, a fixed mindset, and a lack of self-belief.

First, let’s address the fear of rejection.

It’s tough when someone tells you “no,” especially after a long pitch or a sincere value proposition.

You know your solution could really help the person or business in front of you, yet the fear of hearing “no” often stops you from reaching out to potential clients or following up on leads.

This fear can lead to missed opportunities and a lack of persistence.

To overcome this, shift your perspective on rejection. Instead of seeing a “no” as a failure, view it as a step closer to a “yes.” Each rejection is an opportunity to learn and improve.

Regularly expose yourself to situations where rejection is possible. Over time, this will desensitize the fear and build resilience. Focus on the actions you can control, like the number of calls or emails sent, rather than the outcome.

Success often comes from consistent effort, not a perfect result every time.

The second habit is believing that your abilities are static and unchangeable—what’s often referred to as a “fixed mindset.”

If you find yourself avoiding challenges or feeling threatened by the success of others, it’s time to start believing that new abilities can be developed. Recognize and reward effort and progress, not just the end result.

This fosters a culture of perseverance and learning.

Also, embrace positive feedback as a tool to grow and improve your skills.

Lastly, let’s talk about the lack of self-belief, a mental habit that often manifests as doubt.

Doubt leads to hesitation, which punches your confidence, resulting in underperformance.

The way to break this habit is to build confidence through preparation. Confidence comes from knowing your product, market, and customers inside and out.

Start with small, achievable goals to build momentum. Celebrate successes, visualize more positive interactions and outcomes, and remind yourself that you can achieve great things.

What other habits might be holding you back from acquiring the clients you’d love to work with?
