Netflix is launching public tests of its cloud-streamed games. Starting Monday, some Canadian and UK Netflix subscribers can try out streaming Netflix games on select TVs, connected TV devices, and on the web from Netflix.com.
In a blog post, Netflix’s VP of games, Mike Verdu, called this a “limited beta test” for a “small number of members,” so not all subscribers in Canada and the UK will have access immediately.
Despite the small initial launch, this is a significant step for Netflix’s gaming ambitions.
The company introduced its mobile gaming offerings as a perk for subscribers in November 2021, available only on iOS and Android.
By expanding games to TVs and web browsers through cloud streaming, subscribers can potentially play Netflix’s titles on more devices, competing for gaming time on TVs and PCs.
The current game selection includes the original Oxenfree and a new game called Molehew’s Mining Adventure, described as a “gem-mining arcade game.”
When playing on TV, games are controlled using a smartphone. Android users can access the controller through the Netflix app, while iOS users need a special controller app. Web players use a mouse and keyboard.
The supported TVs and connected TV devices are:
- Amazon Fire TV streaming media players
- Chromecast with Google TV
- LG TVs
- Nvidia Shield TV
- Roku devices and TVs
- Samsung Smart TVs
- Walmart Onn
More devices will be added over time, according to Verdu.
While I haven’t personally tried Netflix’s streamed games, given the company’s experience in streaming video, the experience is likely relatively smooth.
Any streaming issues might be more noticeable in a game compared to watching a show.
Netflix is likely fine with some initial hiccups, as it’s starting small to address any issues. As Netflix sees cloud gaming as a value-added feature, similar to Microsoft’s approach, it may not require flawless performance immediately.
Netflix subscribers can still enjoy its 70 mobile games as an alternative.
