Hollywood sues AI maker Midjourney for copying its stars

Disney & NBCUniversal just sued Midjourney for “stealing” Elsa, Shrek & Darth Vader. Can AI make movie magic without paying for the ticket?

Disney and NBCUniversal, two of the biggest names in Hollywood, are suing Midjourney, the company that makes those AI images everyone talks about. They filed the lawsuit this week in Los Angeles. And they are not happy.

Why? Because they say Midjourney’s AI has been using their famous characters without permission. A lot of them. Darth Vader. Elsa from Frozen. The Minions. Shrek. Even poor old Homer Simpson.

According to the studios, Midjourney trained its AI by feeding it “countless” copyrighted images. (That’s lawyer-speak for “a huge pile of stuff they don’t want to count.”) Now the AI can make brand-new pictures that look just like Disney and NBC’s most famous faces, without asking or paying for the right to use them.

The companies say they tried to handle this quietly. You know, a nice private talk, maybe a serious email or two. But Midjourney kept going. Kept updating the software. Kept making the images better. And yes, kept making more pictures that look like Disney and NBC characters.

Disney’s lawyer called it “piracy.” NBCUniversal called it “blatant infringement.” Both mean the same thing: “You’re stealing our stuff.”

So far, Midjourney hasn’t said a word about the lawsuit. Maybe they’re busy making Elsa ride a dinosaur. Or turning Shrek into a superhero. Who knows?

But here’s the big thing. This isn’t just about one AI company. Or one lawsuit. Hollywood is scared. Why? Because if anyone can use AI to make Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader at home, without permission, what happens to copyright? What happens to all the money Hollywood makes from these characters?

This could be the start of a big, messy fight between old Hollywood and new AI. The studios want control. The tech companies want freedom. And in the middle? Poor Shrek, who probably just wants some peace and quiet.

Stay tuned. This story is just getting started.
