Liz Reid, the Head of Google Search, recently revealed that the company’s search engine has been delivering some “odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews” since their recent rollout to all users in the United States.
This acknowledgment comes after a series of viral screenshots showcased the bizarre and sometimes dangerously misleading responses generated by Google’s AI.
In a detailed blog post, Reid addressed the peculiarities of Google’s AI-generated search results, and the measures being taken to rectify these issues.
Among the viral examples was an AI Overview response suggesting it was safe to leave dogs in cars—an assertion Reid clarified as entirely fake.
Another notorious example, “How many rocks should I eat?”, was based on a satirical website that discussed the topic humorously. Reid explained that such an inquiry was almost never made before the screenshot went viral, leading the AI to pull information from the satirical content.
Reid also confirmed the authenticity of a response that advised using glue to stick cheese to pizza, which was sourced from a forum. While forums often provide genuine first-hand information, Reid acknowledged they can also disseminate less-than-helpful advice.
She did not specifically address other viral AI responses, such as the AI suggesting Barack Obama was Muslim or that people should drink urine to pass kidney stones, but these instances have been reported as well.
Pre-Launch Testing and Real-World Challenges
Reid emphasized that Google had extensively tested the AI Overview feature before its public launch.
However, she admitted that “there’s nothing quite like having millions of people using the feature with many novel searches.” This real-world application revealed numerous unforeseen issues that only became apparent under the vast array of user interactions.
Google’s approach to identifying the problem involved analyzing patterns in the AI’s responses over the past few weeks.
This analysis helped the company understand the contexts and types of queries where the AI was most likely to falter.
Implementing Safeguards
In response to these findings, Google has implemented several safeguards to enhance the accuracy and reliability of its AI-generated responses.
The first step involved tweaking the AI to better detect humor and satire, preventing it from taking such content literally.
Additionally, the company has restricted the incorporation of user-generated content from sources like social media and forums into its AI Overviews, as these can often lead to misleading or harmful advice.
To further mitigate risks, Google has introduced “triggering restrictions” for certain types of queries where AI Overviews have not been particularly helpful.
One significant strategy has been to halt AI-generated replies for specific health-related topics, recognizing the potential for serious harm if misinformation were to spread in this critical area.
Moving Forward
Despite the initial hiccups, Google remains committed to refining its AI Overview feature. The company views this period of adjustment as a necessary phase in the broader adoption of AI-driven search enhancements.
Reid noted, “By looking at examples of its responses over the past couple of weeks, we were able to determine patterns where our AI technology didn’t get things right.”
