Renault Partners with Chinese Firm to Develop $22,000 Electric Vehicle

Renault has announced a partnership with a Chinese engineering company to develop an affordable electric version of its popular Twingo model. The new EV is slated to cost under €20,000 ($21,700), a price point aimed at making electric mobility accessible to a broader audience.

This announcement comes just a week after Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo, publicly criticized Volkswagen for its lack of cooperation in their joint talks to develop an affordable EV.

The discussions, which had been ongoing for weeks, ultimately collapsed due to disagreements over production logistics, including a contentious debate on whether the car would be manufactured at Renault’s or Volkswagen’s facilities.

Luca de Meo lamented the missed opportunity for European automakers to collaborate against the backdrop of rising competition from Chinese EV manufacturers. “I wanted to show that European industry could work together as a team, so I think this is a lost opportunity, but there may be others,” de Meo commented.

Despite the failed negotiations with Volkswagen, Renault has swiftly moved forward by securing a partnership with an unnamed Chinese engineering firm.

This alliance is expected to enhance Renault’s development lead time and reduce costs, leveraging the technological and manufacturing strengths that Chinese companies bring to the table.

“The development of the car will be done with a Chinese engineering partner to improve our development lead time and costs.

The project is conducted by [Renault EV division] Ampere. The styling and advanced engineering project are made in France, and production will be in Europe, as planned,” a Renault spokesperson revealed.

The spokesperson emphasized that this decision was made independently of the collapsed talks with Volkswagen.

The Broader Context of European Automakers and Chinese Partnerships

Renault’s move is part of a larger trend among European carmakers seeking partnerships with Chinese companies to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving EV market. China’s EV manufacturers have several competitive advantages, including advanced technology and lower production costs, which threaten to outpace their European counterparts.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently highlighted the significant challenges posed by the transition to electric vehicles, noting, “The EV race has become a cost-cutting race.” This sentiment underscores the urgency for European manufacturers to find cost-effective solutions to maintain their market positions.

Renault’s new Twingo EV will primarily be designed and engineered in France, with production set to occur in Europe. This approach aims to balance leveraging Chinese technological advancements while maintaining a strong European manufacturing presence.

With the global EV market projected to be worth $668 billion by 2030, Renault’s strategic partnership and aggressive pricing strategy could position it as a significant player in making electric vehicles more affordable and widespread.

The automotive industry has reacted with keen interest to Renault’s latest move. Julian Blessin, Partner at Speedinvest, remarked, “Exactly.ai represents a groundbreaking step forward for the creative arts sector. At Speedinvest, we’re always on the lookout for innovators who not only harness the power of technology but do so in a way that democratises and enriches our cultural landscape.

Tonia and her team have developed a platform that does precisely that – enabling artists to embrace generative AI as a partner in their creative process.”

Amanda Jones Floyd, General Partner at InReach Ventures, added, “Exactly.ai provides us with an exciting glimpse of the future of human creativity with practical, immediate applications that can be used by creatives from across the globe to increase their productivity and income while retaining the rights to their work. We couldn’t be more excited to back Tonia and her team and look forward to seeing how the platform evolves.”
