Rakun Card: Simplifying Travel for Those with Hidden Disabilities

A new app is making travel easier for people with conditions like ADHD, Autism, food intolerances, allergies, and other hidden disabilities. The Rakun Card helps users manage and communicate their needs quickly and effectively, ensuring a smoother travel experience.

Peter Buchroithner, the founder of Rakun Card, knows the difficulties faced by people with hidden disabilities. Diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, Buchroithner often struggled with airport security. The chaos, impatience of people, and language barriers made travel stressful for him. His personal experiences inspired him to create Rakun Card.

“Hello makers & creators, thank you for giving Rakun Card a try,” Buchroithner shared launching the App on Product Hunt. “I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD & Autism. A big struggle for me was always getting through airport security. It’s unfamiliar, chaotic, and people can be impatient or even rude. I might be too anxious to talk to them, I might be exhausted after a long flight. I might not speak their language.”

Buchroithner continued, “Rakun Card allows people like me to share their ‘special needs’ in a simple app. It’s not just ADHD or Autism. Rakun Card helps you share your unique preferences including hidden disabilities, food allergies, and more. Our goal is to make the world more inclusive, starting with travel. Because everybody deserves to travel with ease.”

When asked about plans to expand Rakun Card, Buchroithner emphasized the importance of community feedback. “Scaling is a big topic; I’m not too sure yet. I think it’s all about talking to people who need Rakun Card and listening to figure out how to make it better. I believe there is a big need, so it’ll spread once the product is great. We are creating content to support this community for sure.”

The Designer’s Perspective

Verena, a designer for Rakun Card, explained how the idea came about. “We realized that even though there are a lot of printed cards to communicate hidden disabilities, there is no way to communicate these special needs once you’re in a different country where you don’t speak the language,” Verena said.

“Whether you’re experiencing sensory overload at the airport and can’t communicate verbally or have celiac disease and need the local restaurant to know about your food intolerances, a digital card that can be easily translated helps you communicate your needs much easier and faster.”

Rakun Card is more than just an app; it’s a step towards a more inclusive world. By addressing the unique challenges faced by travelers with hidden disabilities, it helps ensure stress-free and enjoyable travel.

As Buchroithner and his team continue to improve and expand their product, Rakun Card has the potential to become an essential tool for millions of travelers worldwide.

Whether you’re navigating airport security or ensuring your dietary needs are understood in a foreign restaurant, Rakun Card aims to make travel easier and more inclusive for everyone.
