OpenAI to open new office in Seoul to tap into South Korea’s AI boom

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is setting up its first office in Seoul. The announcement came on Monday, May 26, 2025, marking a big step in the company’s push into Asia.

South Korea is now OpenAI’s third Asian hub, following offices in Tokyo and Singapore.

Why Seoul?

South Korea has the second-highest number of paying ChatGPT users, trailing only the United States. Weekly users in the country have grown 4.5 times in the past year, says Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer. “Korea’s full-stack AI ecosystem makes it one of the most promising markets,” Kwon noted in a statement.

He highlighted the country’s strength in tech, from chip manufacturing to software development.

OpenAI isn’t starting from scratch here. Earlier this year, the company teamed up with Kakao, South Korea’s top chat app operator.

Their partnership focuses on building AI tools tailored for Korean users. OpenAI also works with local giants like Krafton, a game developer, and SK Telecom.

These ties show OpenAI’s commitment to blending into South Korea’s vibrant tech scene.

The Seoul office will open in the coming months. OpenAI is already hiring staff to connect with local companies and policymakers.

Kwon is in Seoul, meeting with leaders from both the ruling People Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party. These talks hint at OpenAI’s plans to shape AI policies in the region.

South Korea’s tech-savvy culture and strong AI adoption make it a perfect fit for OpenAI. Posts on X reflect excitement about the move, with some users predicting a boost for local startups and innovation.

The office could spark new collaborations and cement South Korea’s role as a global AI leader.

More details on OpenAI’s plans will come soon. For now, Seoul is gearing up to welcome a major player in the AI world.
